Resolving Sanction Alerts
Sanction monitoring searches over 2,500 state and federal healthcare disciplinary action boards. A sanction represents a disciplinary action, board order, or meeting minutes found against credentialed employees. These actions can range from minor fines or complaints to serious issues such as patient abuse or license revocation.
Most sanction alerts will appear as a Yellow Result Status, but those with more severe concerns—such as those including the terms "revoked" or "abuse"—will receive an elevated Red Result Status.
Sanctions, while not as severe as exclusions, can often serve as early warnings for potential compliance issues, including license revocation or exclusion. Below are steps to address sanction alerts effectively.
Steps to Resolve a Sanction Alert
-
Review the Alert Details:
-
Examine the sanction alert to understand its specifics, including the issuing board, the nature of the disciplinary action, and the date of the event.
-
-
Investigate the Validity:
-
Verify if the alert corresponds to the provider’s credentials and employment records. Confirm whether the provider has acknowledged the sanction or if further clarification is required.
-
-
Determine Next Steps Based on Severity:
-
For minor issues (e.g., fines, complaints): Document the findings and consult with your compliance team if necessary.
-
For serious issues (e.g., abuse, license revocation): Take immediate action, which may include temporarily removing the provider from duty and notifying the appropriate stakeholders.
-
-
Document Updates in Your System:
-
Update your HR and compliance systems with details of the investigation and any corrective actions taken to address the alert.
